The Retreat Farmhouse
The historic Whistlestop Quilt Retreat, built around 1860 by some of Sweetwater Valley's first settlers, has 5 large bedrooms and 4 ½ bathrooms. The farmhouse can accommodate up to 18 guests, each in their own twin bed. Every room is warmly decorated with quilts, antiques and folkart. Each of the twin beds are made up with fine linens and covered with quilts made by local quilters. The main floor of the farmhouse sleeps 11 guests in 3 large bedrooms all with private baths.
The two beautiful bedrooms on the second floor sleep 7 guests, with a half bath in one of the bedrooms. These two bedrooms have lovely views and a nice quiet sitting area. Second floor guests have a dedicated full bath located on the main floor just for their use.
The Grand Central Station, or the sewing room, has 13 individual sewing stations, each with its own table, padded desk chair and trash can. Cutting tables with mats and rulers are available as well as large custom ironing stations with quality irons. Electrical outlets are located on top of the tables for ease.
Guests that do not require a sewing station have plenty of room in the lovely parlor or the bright, airy sunroom. The parlor is a sunny, comfortable room perfect for hand work, reading, relaxing, watching tv, a movie or just chatting. WiFi is available and a Blue Ray player is available to play your favorite DVD or Blue Ray disc. There is also a table for games, puzzles or afternoon tea. The sunroom, just off of the main sewing area, is a bright space furnished with comfortable wicker furniture and is encircled by windows with views of the gardens and surrounding farmland. It is the perfect spot to gather and sew with friends.
Meals are not provided at the Whistlestop Quilt Retreat unless specifically stated for a particular event. The large country kitchen is fully equipped with a double oven, gas cooktop, microwave, refrigerator and dishwasher should you choose to prepare your own meals. The farmhouse has central air and heat, with ceiling fans in all bedrooms. There is ample parking. Unfortunately, due to the age of the house, it is not handicap accessable. Smoking and pets are not permitted.
Nearby downtown Sweetwater, just five minutes away, has many good restaurants, cafes, tea rooms and fast food options, as well as antique stores and main street shopping (details are listed on the Sweetwater TN page).
OLD GLORYThe Old Glory bedroom is on the main level of the farmhouse, sleeps three guests and has a private bath with shower. This patriotic room was originally the dining room. The room is decorated with beautiful quilts in patriotic colors and fabrics. The Old Glory room is in honor of all that have served to defend our freedom.
The Lincoln bedroom is also a main level bedroom that sleeps four guests. The spacious bedroom is connected to a large bath with two vanities and a tub/shower. The room is named in honor of Abraham Lincoln who was our President around the time the farmhouse was built.
The Shiloh bedroom is a spacious main level room that sleeps four guests. This beautiful room is graced with lovely quilts handmade with civil war era fabrics. The Shiloh room has a private bath with shower. This special room is named for the 1862 major civil war battle fought in Hardin County, Tennessee. The two day battle at Shiloh produced more than 23,000 casualities and was the bloodiest battle in American history at its time.
The farmhouse has two large, beautiful and bright bedrooms upstairs. The Attic bedroom is like sleeping over at Grandmas house. This room sleeps four guests in beds that feature beautiful bright quilts handmade from 1930's reproduction fabrics. The floors on the second level are the refinished, original heart-of-pine wide plank wood. The Attic bedroom features a nice half bath.
The Garden room is the brightest and most spacious room in the farmhouse. This lovely room celebrates the beautiful farmland and gardens surrounding the house. This second level bedroom sleeps three guests and features a nice wicker rocker in it's corner sitting area. The landing at the top of the stairs, between the two bedrooms, is the perfect sitting area with two comfortable wing chairs. The perfect place to read or hand sew. The Garden room does not have a private bathroom. Both the Attic and Garden room share a dedicated full bath with tub and shower on the main level of the farmhouse.
